Dangal (2016)

"Dangal" is a 2016 Indian biographical sports drama film directed by Nitesh Tiwari. It is based on the true story of Mahavir Singh Phogat and his daughters Geeta Phogat and Babita Kumari, who became successful wrestlers. Here is a summary of the story:

The film is set in the rural town of Balali in Haryana, India. Mahavir Singh Phogat (Aamir Khan) is a former wrestler who had to give up his dreams of winning a gold medal for India due to financial constraints. However, he is determined to fulfill his dream through his future children.

Mahavir has four daughters: Geeta and Babita being the eldest. He initially faces resistance from his wife and the community for training his daughters in wrestling, as it is seen as a male-dominated sport. Despite the opposition, Mahavir begins coaching Geeta (Zaira Wasim, Fatima Sana Shaikh) and Babita (Suhani Bhatnagar, Sanya Malhotra) himself.

Under Mahavir's strict training regimen, the girls endure rigorous physical training and face societal challenges. They face criticism, taunts, and skepticism from their peers and the wrestling community. However, Mahavir's determination and the girls' hard work start to pay off.

Geeta and Babita participate in various local and national wrestling competitions and gradually start winning medals. Geeta, in particular, shows immense talent and becomes the first female wrestler from Haryana to win a gold medal at the Commonwealth Games.

As Geeta's success grows, she is offered a scholarship to train in the National Sports Academy. She moves away from her father's training and starts training under a different coach, causing a strain in their relationship. Geeta struggles with the different training style and loses her focus and determination.

Meanwhile, Babita also excels in wrestling and wins medals at various competitions. When Geeta's performance suffers, she realizes the value of her father's coaching and returns to his training. Mahavir helps Geeta regain her focus and confidence.

In a pivotal moment, Geeta competes at the 2010 Commonwealth Games and faces an opponent from Australia whom she had previously lost to. With her father's guidance and support, Geeta manages to defeat her opponent and win the gold medal.

The film concludes with Geeta and Babita's success as wrestlers, and Mahavir's dream of winning a gold medal for India is fulfilled through his daughters. The film also highlights the societal shift in attitudes towards women in sports and the empowerment of young girls to pursue their dreams.

"Dangal" portrays the inspiring journey of Mahavir Singh Phogat and his daughters, showcasing their struggles, determination, and ultimate triumph in the world of wrestling.
