The Joker is a 2019 American psychological thriller film directed by Todd Phillips, who co-wrote the screenplay with Scott Silver. The film, based on DC Comics characters, stars Joaquin Phoenix as the Joker and provides a possible origin story for the character. Arthur Fleck is a mentally-ill, unemployed clown living in Gotham City. After being beaten by a gang of thugs, Arthur is inspired by talk show host Murray Franklin to pursue stand-up comedy. He also has a crush on his neighbor, Sophie Dumond, and takes care of his ailing mother, Penny.
Arthur's attempts at comedy are unsuccessful due to his inability to control his laughter, which is a side-effect of his medication. After being fired from his job as a clown, Arthur is harassed by three drunk Wayne Enterprises employees. He shoots and kills them in self-defense, but his act of violence is covered up by the corrupt police.
The incident sparks a wave of riots across Gotham, and Arthur is idolized by the people as the "Joker". Meanwhile
