The Power of the Dog is a 2021 neo-western drama film directed and co-written by Jane Campion. It stars Benedict Cumberbatch, Kirsten Dunst, Jesse Plemons, and Kodi Smit-McPhee. The movie is based on the 1967 novel of the same name by Thomas Savage.
Set in 1925, the story follows Phil (Cumberbatch) and George Burbank (Plemons), brothers who own a ranch in Montana. Phil is a rough and domineering man who takes pleasure in bullying his brother and other ranch hands. The arrival of a new cook Rose (Dunst) and her son Peter (Smit-McPhee) changes the dynamics of the ranch.
Phil initially harbors a dislike for Peter, who is quiet and intelligent. As time passes, however, Phil begins to take a liking to him and starts to mentor him in various skills. But when George announces his intention to marry Rose, Phil becomes jealous and starts to plot against the couple.
The film explores themes of toxic masculinity, repressed homosexuality, and the power dynamics in relationships. The cinematography, score, and acting performances have been highly praised. Cumberbatch's portrayal of Phil Burbank has been commended by many critics, with some calling it one of his best performances.
